| Peter Funken Mr. Individual, walking… in: CHRISTIAN HASUCHA, Öffentliche Interventionen (Public Intervention), Verlag für Moderne Kunst, Nürnberg, 2013 (Monograph) Herr Individual geht (Mr. Individual walking...) - over the heads of passersby, one step ahead of others. Beneath him rolls a conveyor belt, almost like a road. Mr. Individual’s path leads in one direction, he must move forwards in order not to fall back. All others go on the pavement, as well or as badly as they can. They have a destination or not. As they move, they telephone, eat sausages, drink coffee or beer, talk loudly and lightly, listen to music, think about the next holiday, about work, love or debts. People are individual, and yet are formed the same. The individual is unique - alone through his ‘natality’ - so-named by Hannah Arendt - only later death makes equals of us all. Mr. Individual is Citizen Individual. He goes where he will.He goes forwards, he cannot stand still, he goes outside, he goes into himself. Because Citizen Individual is a citizen, it could be that he goes and disappears. The reason; Citizen Individual has since 1987 - since Christian Hasucha created Mr. Individual - changed a lot, just as the world around him has. Citizen Individual has noticed that his steady pace, and his whole effort, is not enough in itself to become and remain a citizen. That confuses and hurts him. Now he has to fight to become and remain a citizen. He considers - is it worth the effort? It often seems to him that existence is hardly worth it, as little real and basic understanding has existed between him and the others for a long time. Perhaps Citizen Individual, like his friends, is too individualistic for a future dominated by banality and a lack of transparency. In order for this future not to happen, Citizen Individual must remain still, he should begin to talk to the others about how they see the future in order for him to move forwards...
